Annan: Worse May be Ahead in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Tuesday, April 02 2002 @ 05:56 PM GMT

NEW YORK: U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has warned that much worse is ahead in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict unless, "the logic of war is broken."

But Annan says it is impossible to break the cycle of violence without addressing the core concerns of both sides. He defines them as occupation, violence, terrorism and the economic plight of the Palestinians.

He says that only a reckless optimist would think the worst is over in the conflict.

The secretary general made his remarks to U.N. Security Council members in a closed-door session Monday.

Saturday, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling on Israel to withdraw from all Palestinian cities, and for both sides to move immediately toward a cease-fire. --voa--
