Men of Nablus surrender to save families after night-time assault

AN OVERNIGHT Israeli attack on a Palestinian refugee camp in effect brought an end to nearly a week of ferocious fighting in the West Bank town of Nablus yesterday.
After a five-hour attack involving rockets, helicopter cannons and tank shells, Palestinian men walked out of the al-Ein camp two-by-two, obeying orders to surrender or put the lives of their families at risk.

Watched by their children, the men, aged 16 to 45, stood in line along a road out of town within the sights of tank machineguns. Holding their identity cards, they waited to be frisked and questioned before being herded into the courtyard of a water pumping station, where they sat, their hands in plastic manacles.
