Israel was in near diplomatic isolation yesterday as the US secretary of state, Colin Powell, completed preparations to fly to Jerusalem this evening to confront the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon.
In a show of international solidarity, the UN, the US, the European Union and Russia turned up the heat on Israel by issuing a joint statement calling for an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian cities and towns. Increasing the diplomatic pressure, Germany announced an arms embargo on Israel.
