The refugee camps of Balata and Jenin, raided by Israeli troops, are widely seen as a heartland of Hamas and Fatah radicals but they are also home to tens of thousands of Palestinians living in poverty.
But, while despair runs deep, so does a spirit of resistance.
It was in Balata that the first intifada began on the West Bank in 1987.
Many of the 19,000 Palestinians that call this camp home still dream of returning to their family homes in Jaffa and other towns and villages along Israel's Mediterranean coastline.
