A weekend of Middle East violence has climaxed in the deaths of at least 18 Israelis and 30 Palestinians and shown that there is no haven for people on either side of the conflict.
It was one of the highest death tolls in more than 17 months of fighting that has left more than 1,300 dead and thousands wounded.
In the latest incidents, nine Israelis, seven soldiers and two civilians, were killed yesterday in a shooting attack on a military checkpoint north of the West Bank city of Ramallah.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Arie Mekel, said it looked as if the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, had "given the so-called green-light to kill and attack right-now".
